    December workbench

Pat, thanks for the comment! I don't want to clutter the thread with my stuff. Here is a photo of the hen; I'm having a hard time finding a photo of the drake. They're very oversized... about the size of my arm. Glad you're enjoying the ruddy! I'd love to see it out in the rig! Safe, happy...

    December workbench

I do not like to post pictures of restoration work, without the owner's permission, but here are some "contemporary antique" pieces that I've made recently. These are brand new decoys, made to look close to 100 years old. I sign every decoy, and usually carve it out of very different wood than...

    December workbench

It looks like everyone has been busy this December! Dennis, Debbi does a great job. I really like the duck signs. Bob, the woodies are awesome! Great animation. Dave, I really like the mellow colors on the can. Steve, that is one of the nicest bird feeders I've ever seen. As usual, a...

    Texas Decoy Carving Get Together

Carl, Definitely look Dave up. I am from VA, go to college in TX, and I am going to graduate in December. Thus, I will not be down here much longer. Dave is a great guy to get together and talk ducks and decoys with. If you have any hunting spots, maybe you all can do some carving and...

    Texas Decoy Carving Get Together

Dave, Hopefully, between the both of us we can piece together something to prove that some carving was done! Keep that steady pace going on the decoys. Thanks again for having me, Spencer

Steve, Thanks for checking it out. I had a great time getting together with Dave. It's always neat seeing other carvers' shops and their carving processes. I agree with you on the eyes! Regards, Spencer

    Texas Decoy Carving Get Together

Saturday night, we were talking paint and Dave let me make a mess and paint a hen Redhead that he carved and had primed. I was on the road back to school, Sunday morning. Thanks for checking out this thread! I still need to carve the epoxy off of the body, refine it a little, and carve some...

    Texas Decoy Carving Get Together

That was pretty much all that I could do on that bird for the weekend, as the epoxy takes about a day to cure. Dave let me pull out some paper and sketch some birds. Everyday, I try to practice my drawing. I really like going out and doing field sketches, but I also like to work on drawing...

    Texas Decoy Carving Get Together

Before the glue up. I usually use waterproof wood glue, and copper tacks. However, this time I got to use Dave's special epoxy mixture.

    Texas Decoy Carving Get Together

The next morning, I carved the body and hollowed it out "old school"- with a hand drill. When I first began to carve, I hollowed my decoys with scorps. Then, I was fortunate to get my hands on a drill press and I have never looked back. I always write something inside of my decoys. It is...

    Texas Decoy Carving Get Together

As a senior Economics major at Baylor University, in Waco, TX, I do not get a chance to carve much. I spend most of my breaks, back home in Virginia, carving decoys and folk art, but most of my time is spent restoring old decoys. I do fit in some flat art, while at Baylor, when I find breaks...

    September - Workbench

Just finished a couple of Wood Ducks before school started back up. Hollow white cedar and oils. No sandpaper touched these birds. I wanted the knife marks/craftsmanship to show through. Hopefully, you all don't mind seeing another Wood Duck during Teal season!

Great plumage on all of those birds! It's been pretty slow in Virginia.

Beautiful work! The patterns that you chose are really interesting and seem to really "fit" the skull.

haha that seems about right. I am really thankful for all of his help over the years. He has had such a positive impact on the carving community. But thanks! I am attending Baylor University in Texas. I only get to carve when I go home on christmas and summer breaks. I really like that sprig!

What's on the Workbench This October

Here are a pair of labrador ducks I finished up at the end of the summer. I made quite a few birds and folk art pieces last summer, but I am now at school and am unable to carve. Sorry for the bad quality pictures and bad angles. Everyones birds look great!
