MAY What's On Your Workbench?

ADD has been acting up lately . Gotta get back on this pair and get them done . The drake is almost there but i still have some work on his girl . Hollow Jersey white cedar .

Steve,
I really like direction you went with that mallard. A rig of mallards is not far off on the list for me and I am going to be coming back to look at that picture to steal a few idea's from it. Mostly in the carving layout itself but some of the paint idea's. Very cool bird.

Mike,
Love the Pin its so clean.

Bob and Pat,
Can you share some history lessons with the rest of the class on those Doc Baumgartner decoys. I am not at all familiar with him but the decoys are very appealing to my eye.

Brandon - I don't know a ton about him. I know his name was Frank "Doc" Baumgardner and he was from Houghton Lake, Michigan. There is an article on him in Decoy Magazine in the Nov/Dec issue 2007. He made great little bluebill decoys and, still very reasonably priced.

Bob - Do you have any more history on him?

On my bench are mottled ducks, ring necks, BWT, black bellied whistling ducks, a duck sign and 2 wooden tommy guns. These are the first to leave the bench in May.

Not much more than in the article ,except that he wasnt a doctor. He liked to hang out down at the boathouse...on the dock.

here are a couple more shots of my version

Ron - Nice ringers!

Dave - love the Roman nose on the can. Can't wait to see your magnum sprig done. On my bench, more white cedar sprigs. Being Michigan White Cedar, I couldn't help putting alittle "Schmidt" on them. Did alittle feather stamping on the backs. I'm going all the way with the hens!

Dwane O - Your white cedar is amazing! Putting a spokeshave to that wood is one of the real joys of carving! Thank you for what you do! Pat

Good to see you carving more Jeff!!!

Pat beat the heck out of those birds, they look nice

thanks tom. the amount of mess --created by my rugrats in the garage during that little bit of carving -- caused an overall net loss of productivity

Finally finished my pickleweed "carry-on luggage" project. I have a very picture heavy post showing these birds, so I'll put up a separate post on the project so's not to hog up a bunch of space on this month's "workbench" thread.

Been working on the "Kalamazoo River Carving Knife"

4 spindle Northstar I've had for almost a year and just now getting it going. Doing some modifications to get it running more like a gunstock Blanchard lathe. Concept is good now just to get everything fine tuned but should be a lot of fun. Main use will be spoons but I can see a decoy or 2 coming off it.

Nice job on that, Hitch. I sure envy you guys who have that ability to carve out such a beautiful decoy and then can sit down and paint it like you have Michelangelo's blood running through your veins. My of my there are times when I wished that I could see the difference between red, brown, and green---but alas, I can't.

Considering your new shop location, you start making ukuleles. I hear they're real hot right now and not much bigger that your spoons. On second thought something like a mandolin or violin with a carved top and bottom, would be more up your alley.

Here are some teal that started back in March and finished in May, then floated at the HdG show this weekend. there's also a tree duck mixed in there.

This was last week, there's a balsa black duck in the back there which completed a pair for the comp.

Last weekends adventure brought me across something on a real duck's "workbench" This is a MD black duck nest.

Painting my rig in my messy and blurry paint room.

Finally, the troops lined up the night before the big show.

I would have repainted the hens had I had the time, but I'm pretty pleased with my first rig in 2 years and first teal since 2007. I've definitely progressed since the last group.
