New Year - January Workbench Thread 2014

Last month I posted a Woodduck Drake that I was making for my brother, time to post up its mate. Hollow cedar painted with acrylics.

If you ever have a Scratch and Dent sale I'd like to be the first to know :) :)

Jim, I thought what you had to say to Bob, was simply "great"! What would you say if Bob said, "But, Jim, the scratches and dents add to the character of the decoys."

Thought your reply was a darn good one.

Apparently, this is Scaup month! Here are a pair, as well as the second extended head threatening mallard I made, this time, for my pwn motion string. The first one I made had a wood V-wing ahead of the keel to generate a wake. That worked allright, but the bird had a tendency to dive as it moved forward on the cord. I doweled additional tan cork pieces on under the breast on this bird, after sealing them with three coats of Val-oil to generate a wake and keep the head/neck up on top of the water. Tank test worked well.

Everything in cork-tan for the scaup, BSC for the mallard-basswood heads, white pine tailboards. I put a cedar bottom board on the mallard. Everything painted in Ronan's oils.

That Canvas Swan looks Very Good, and Spot on for Gunnin'. Head is in a balanced position, neck seat looks correct and tight, not to many wires, and just right stringers. Should ride the waves pretty good!

Hey,Boz,
Do you see a scratch or dent anywhere on that pair of mallards that Bob is working on?

Al,
That's because the touch ups are expertly done by a fine old Italian craftsman! ;-) ;-) Here's a picture of that very same pair afloat on the AuTrain River (MI) ( that would've been the 2008 season), and also would mean those birds have even survived being gunned over by Ryan Werden, so they're pretty much indestructible :0).
That hen had a nice pellet crease on the top of her head that I had previously repaired - I believe from a 2007 hunt.

Well I finally took the plunge and began fooling around with trying to carve. Here is my very first attempt. I still have to gather some stuff to keep going like a spokeshave, some epoxy, eyes, paint, etc.

It will be a drake bufflehead. Jersey cedar.
